Forgotten Grapes

Wine Tasting Weekend:

Santa Barbara/Paso Robles

April 8th-11th, 2010

Only $885.00 per person

Oh sure, you think you’re an expert on Forgotten Grapes. You may have scoured every dark corner of this website. You may have even attended one (or more) of our local wine tasting events. But you’re not really a Forgotten Grape expert until you’ve traveled with us into the dark heart of Forgotten Grape winemaking, and this April, Forgotten Grapes is giving you the opportunity to join us in doing just that. For the first time ever, we’re organizing a long weekend of wine, food, fun, and yes, Forgotten Grapes in the gorgeous wine country of Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, and California’s Central Coast, and we want you to join us.

It’s our first ever Forgotten Grapes Wine Tasting Weekend Thursday, April 8th through Sunday, April 11th. And we’re giving you the opportunity to travel along with us on this trip of a lifetime for only $885.00 per person based on double occupancy, all inclusive.

YOU BRING YOUR PALATE, WE’LL BRING EVERYTHING ELSE!

The Forgotten Grapes Wine Tasting Weekend will take place from Thursday, April 8th 2010 through Sunday, April 11th 2010, and we have room for 10 total Forgotten Grape lovers to join us for the weekend. Because of this limited availability and the nature of our accommodations, we’re limiting the trip strictly to couples and/or single friends who don’t mind sharing a room and/or bed together (sorry single folks out there – we promise to do better next time). As we mentioned above, the $885 per person price will cover just about every aspect of the trip: all accommodations, all ground transportation (including transportation from southern California up to Paso Robles and back), all meals, all winery tours, and of course all wine tastings. The only thing you’ll have to open up your pocketbook or wallet for during the weekend is for the wine you’ll want to buy from the 13 wineries we’ll be visiting, and we’ll even transport your cases back down to southern California for you so you don’t have to pay the extra shipping costs!

13 WINERIES, 4 GOURMET DINNERS, WINEMAKER TOURS & LUNCHES, AND MORE!

Forgotten Grapes has put together an exciting itinerary of winery tours, wine tastings, and gourmet meals for the four-day trip, focusing as we always do on the Forgotten Grapes of wine (and if you’re a regular follower of our website, then you know that the Central Coast is a veritable hotbed of Forgotten Grapes production). Have no fear, though, traditional wine lovers, we’ll also be tasting enough Cabs, Zins, Chards, Syrahs and Pinots over the four days that you won’t go home on Sunday disappointed. We’ll make sure of that.

Our tastings are scheduled at 13 different wineries over the four days all across the Central Coast region, from Santa Ynez in the south to Paso Robles in the north. Most of these wineries are small, family-owned, low-production wineries that focus on hand-crafting their wines and producing small quantities of truly fine, exquisite wines. It’s a rare chance for you to personally get to know some of these cult producers, to meet the winemakers and try their wares first-hand, and to bring some of their bottles home with you for your personal collection and drinking pleasure.

We’ll also be stopping at a few wineries in the area whose names you may already recognize and tasting some of their exclusive reserve, library, and winery-only wines. In both cases, we’ll be treated to tours of their vineyards and winemaking operations, so you’ll have a chance to see how the wine is made and ask the winemakers anything you like about their wines, the region, the grapes, and the passion and dedication behind their work.

Below is the current itinerary for the trip, although we should note while we’ve done our best to finalize this itinerary, it is subject to change:

2010 FORGOTTEN GRAPES CENTRAL COAST WINE TASTING WEEKEND ITINERARY

Thursday, April 8th

We’ll pick up all participants from several to-be-determined locations on Thursday morning and set forth up the scenic 101 freeway toward the Central Coast and Paso Robles. Our first stop will be for a wine-paired lunch at Roblar Winery & Cooking School in Santa Ynez. Roblar is a newer winery just outside of Santa Ynez and features “a seasonal menu that marries Mediterranean flavors with a California sensibility, showcasing fresh organic produce from local farms, artisan cheeses, humanely raised meats, and sustainable seafood.”

After our lunch at Roblar, we’ll make our way further north to Claiborne & Churchill Vintners for a tasting. Founded in 1983 by the husband-and-wife winemaking team of Claiborne Thompson and Fredericka Churchill, Claiborne & Churchill is a boutique winery crafting cult wines in a straw-bale production barn. Clay Thompson (the namesake Claiborne) will give us a tour of the property and lead us through a tasting of their wines, including their Pinot Noir, Brut Rose, and Alsatian-style whites they’ve come to be known for.

With two wineries under our belt, we’ll arrive at Paso Robles in the early evening; you’ll have some time to get acquainted with our accommodations for the weekend – the inspiring ShadowWater estate on Shadow Mountain in Paso Robles’ famed “Templeton Gap.” You’ll be able to unwind, relax, and maybe even take a dip in the pool or hot tub while we cook you dinner. Chris has even promised to dip into his own cellar and bring along a selection of his own favorite Forgotten Grapes for the group to sample during dinner. Then it’s off to bed for a busy day of wine tasting tomorrow.

Friday, April 9th

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast cooked by your hosts,  we’ll kick off the day with a tour and tasting at Carmody McKnight Estate Vineyards. You might recognize owner Gary Conway from his matinee-idol status as star of the old TV series “Land of the Giants” and “Burke’s Law,” or you might recognize his wife Marian McKnight Conway as Miss America 1957. Either way, what you’ll be sure to recognize is their wonderful collection of sustainable, biodynamic wines that come from some of the finest and most magical soils on earth.

Next we’ll pop by next door to the Dubost Ranch. The Dubost family has owned and cultivated the Dubost Ranch since emigrating to the U.S. from France in 1871 and proprietor and descendent Curt Dubost will lead us on a tour and tasting (including of his prized Tempranillo and Negrette – one of our favorite red Forgotten Grapes found only in western France and here on the Central Coast) and also fire up his locally renowned smoker as we enjoy a barbecue lunch with him nestled among the Dubost vines.

After lunch at Dubost, we’ll make our way up Chimney Rock Road to the Starr Ranch Winery, where owner Judy Starr will answer all your questions as we taste her extremely small-batch varietal wines (under 100 cases produced of each) of Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne, and Tempranillo. Judy is also a major grape grower in the area, so keep your eye out for Starr Ranch designations on some of the single vineyard wines we’ll be tasting at other properties this weekend. If we’re lucky, she’ll also let us sample some of the persimmons she grows on the property.

From Starr, we’ll travel from the Westside of Paso Robles to the East side for a tasting at cult favorite Hug Cellars. Owner and winemaker Augie Hug (yes, that’s really his last name!) has been in the wine business for over two decades and producing his own wines since 1994. He hand-crafts 16 different wines from 12 different varietals, but only produces 1200 cases a year, so his wine is incredibly small-batch, sought-after, and hard-to-find. If Augie is in town (he’s got a regular job just like the rest of us), he’ll take us on a tour of his winemaking facilities, guide us through a tasting of his wines, and if we’re lucky, we’ll get to taste some of his yet-to-be-released wines straight from the barrel.

From there we’ll journey to the east side of Paso Robles for our final destination of the evening, Cass Winery. To say that Cass Winery is one of our favorite wineries In Paso Robles is a terrific understatement. They have been huge supporters of Forgotten Grapes and continue to produce wines featuring many of the same grapes we feature on the website. Fortunately, their wines are excellent and the winery’s co-owners Ted and Lisa Plemons are two of the most fun people we know. Ted and Lisa along with co-owners Steve and Alice Cass will be guiding us around their winery and leading us through a tour of their wines, and Ted has already promised us that over the course of the evening, we’ll probably be dipping into some of their library wines as well. Trust us, Ted is a wild man once he gets going; he’ll definitely be one of the most memorable parts of this weekend. At Cass, we’re also planning a very special multi-course dinner prepared by Cass’ in-house chef that is going to surprise and open a lot of eyes (*rubbing hands together* mwah hah hah hah). It will be like nothing you’ve ever experienced at a wine tasting before, and of course we’ll be enjoying every part of the meal with a selection of Cass wines (which is probably where Ted’s library comes into play).

From there it is back to ShadowWaters for a good night’s sleep or perhaps a late-night hot tub with a glass of wine. You decide.

Saturday, April 10th

After exploring the northern quadrants of Paso wine country, Saturday will find us traveling South into the famed Templeton Gap, the source of the region’s famed microclimate and sought-after terroir. After another hearty breakfast at ShadowWaters, our first stop today will be at another of Forgotten Grapes’ favorite wineries of all-time, Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards. We’ll get a tour of the facility and a chance to sample many of their Forgotten Grape wines – such as Negrette, Blaufrankisch, Malvasia Bianca and more – that are only available at the winery. We’ll also dip into their Cabs, Chards, Merlots, Zins, and especially their Pinots, which we consider one of our favorite wines of all time.

After our Wild Horse tasting, we’ll drive into downtown Templeton for lunch at McPhee’s Grill. A local institution and 2009 Diner’s Choice winner, Chef Ian McPhee whips up traditional lunch favorites using fresh local ingredients with a Central Coast flair. This will be your chance to grab a burger, salad or sandwich (and if you want a change of pace, one of the local microbrews Ian features at his restaurant), and fuel yourself for the rest of the afternoon.

Next we’ll head west into the Templeton Gap to the Lone Madrone Winery. Founded by Neil Collins, who honed his winemaking skills at Adelaida, Wild Horse, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s famed Chateau du Beaucastel before becoming head of vineyard operations for Tablas Creek, and his sister Jackie Meisinger, Lone Madrone is their own private label that allows them to experiment and work with many of the lesser-known Forgotten Grapes that they (and we) love. Those include Picpoul, Marsanne, Roussanne, Tannat, Barbera, Neibbiolo, and Albarino.

We’ll head back north for our next tasting, traveling to the Sylvester Winery for a tasting of the wines from Baretto Cellars. While Sylvester is a large-scale winery that houses many different labels under its aegis, Baretto Cellars is the exact opposite, a small-handcrafted label created by Michael Baretto (who is also one of the chief winemaker at Sylvester) that focuses on Spanish and Portugese varietals grown in the Central Coast region. We’ll get a tour of the Sylvester operations (giving you a chance to see how some of your favorite mega-winery wines are produced) and then settle in for a quaint tasting of Baretto’s Tempranillo, Verdelho, Tannat, Grenache, and Port wines in the quiet of Sylvester’s barrel room. Once again, there may exist the possibility to taste some of Michael’s soon-to-be-bottled wines straight out of the barrel.

After that, we’ll head into downtown Paso Robles, where you’ll have some time to explore this quaint, charming wine village and visit a few of the 14 tasting rooms assembled around the town square before we meet for dinner at Artisan. Hailed as one of the new, fresh talents on the Paso Robles dining scene, Chef Chris Kobayashi will be crafting a multi-course meal of local market-fresh ingredients for us, paired with wines straight from Artisan’s cellar. We’ve eaten there. Trust us. It’s stunning culinary craftsmanship and you’re really going to enjoy it.

Sunday, April 11th

Sleep in on Sunday, as you enjoy one last hearty breakfast and pack up for your last day on the Central Coast. We’ll begin our trek out of town with a visit to Venteux Vineyards. A relatively young winery (owners Scott & Bobbi Stetzle moved into the area in 2001), Venteux – like its differently-spelled French namesake – specializes in reds made from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Petit Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We’ll get a tour of their property before a private tasting of their wines in Scott and Bobbi’s private wine cellar.

Then we’ll hit the 101 and make our way back to southern California, but not without a stop for our final winery of the trip, Kenneth Volk Vineyards. If you’re not familiar with Ken, he was the original proprietor and winemaker at Wild Horse before he sold his share and started his new winery from scratch. He’s also the man responsible for bottling many of the more obscure Forgotten Grapes found in the Central Coast, including Negrette, Blaufrankisch, and Malvasia Bianca. Suffice to say, he’s keeping this tradition of growing and bottling “Heirloom grapes” as he calls them alive at his new winery, and you’ll have a chance to both meet the man himself and to taste many of these spectacular and unknown wines for yourself. We may even get to try something he’s been working on that hasn’t been released yet. And we’ll definitely be tasting some of his award-winning Pinot Noirs, another carryover from his days at Wild Horse.

Finally, after all of this, we’ll make one last stop for an early dinner at the world-famous Hitching Post II restaurant in Buellton. If you’ve ever seen the movie Sideways, then you know the Hitching Post, which became an international icon after the movie. Oh, and they have outstanding food as well, and make their own wines to boot. We’ll enjoy one last meal together and a glass of the Hitching Post’s homemade wines before we complete the drive back down to southern California and deliver you (and all the wine you’ve picked up) safely home.
