The Bekaa Valley in Lebanon is one of the oldest
wine regions in the world, with recorded vine
cultivation dating back almost 6,000 years. Cradled
between two steep mountain ranges, the valley
sits in a rain curtain which limits the amount of
precipitation the area gets each year but also keeps
temperatures consistent and the ground richly fertile.
One of the most famous wine-making houses
in the Bekaa Valley is Chateau Kefraya, which
dates back to 1946 and produces an eponymous
red wine acclaimed the world over and much
sought-after. Chateau Kefraya is rich and elegant; sometimes a
a blend of French and Spanish grapes (Cinsault,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, Carignane,
Mourvedre and Tempranillo) that thrive in the
warmer Mediterranean climate of Lebanon, this wine is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. Aged 24 months in French oak, the wine is deep, intense,
super long, and incredibly opulent. The perfect
alternative to a pricy California Cab or Bordeaux
blend, its complexity will leave you thinking about
it days after you drink it.
